Experience in democracy protection, civic engagement, and Southern political systems
Co-founder & Chairman
Robert Schentrup serves as Chairman of the Board for Americans for Freedom and Liberty and is a co-founder. A Florida-born activist and organizer, Robert first became engaged in politics in 2018, when there was a horrific shooting in his hometown of Parkland. His sister, Carmen Schentrup, was one of the 17 killed in that shooting.
Robert turned his pain into passion and began his advocacy for common sense gun reforms that brought him into communities across Florida, where he witnessed firsthand that many residents—especially those most impacted by violence and inequity—had lost faith in their democracy to be responsive.
Determined to address the structural issues undermining that trust, Robert helped found Americans for Freedom and Liberty to re-imagine and reclaim the words freedom and liberty. These values have profound meaning for communities in the American South who, for centuries, have fought and sacrificed life and limb for their democratic rights.
Robert believes that those democratic rights deserve a strong defense today. Under his leadership, AFL is committed to protecting democracy through litigation support, legal defense, public education, and community outreach.
AFL's Board of Directors brings together a diverse group of experts in public policy, nonprofit governance, election law, and community organizing. The Board provides oversight, ensures strong governance, and guides the organization's strategic direction.
Our founding leadership brings deep experience in democracy protection, civic engagement, and understanding of Southern political systems—all centered around organizing and empowering impacted communities.
